From the 26th to 30th of June, Dr. Harmony Musiyarira attended the 25th Annual General Meeting of the Society Of Mining Professors (SOMP) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The conference was jointly hosted by South African Institute of Mining And Metallurgy (SAIMM) and SOMP. It was hosted at The Maslow Hotel from the 25th to 26th of June 2014 while University of Pretoria and Wits University jointly hosted on the 27th and 28th of June 2014. Dr. Musiyarira presented two papers, namely Future Challenges in Mining and Interventions for Sustainability of Minerals Education. The founding directors of the Department of Mining and Process Engineering, Professors Helmut Mischo and Godfrey Dzinomwa also attended the conference.
Professor Godfrey Dzinomwa presented a paper on Women in Mining - A Case study for Namibia and Zimbabwe.The conference provided an immense opportunity to network with leading professional within the minerals industry from all continents and raising the profile of the Polytechnic of Namibia as a leading tertiary institution in Namibia. Important links that can yield results in areas of research and staff development were also established at the conference and the department will vigorously pursue and utilise links established at the conference.
The Polytechnic of Namibia is set to host the next regional meeting for the Society of Mining Professors in the second half of 2015.
